June 7, 2017 / Emma / Comments Off on Our Dexter Cows Move to New Pasture
Cows are really just about the easiest animals to manage… They respect the electric fence, they’re easy on the land, and they’re pretty laid back.
This video shows Jason moving our 3 Dexter cows from an old pasture space into another space, filled with tall and delicious greenery! You can see each of the 3 cows up close and personal!
Perhaps the most fun we have around here is when we get to take our animals to schools, birthday parties, community centers, and other cool places. We love sharing a taste of the farm with others and kids just love the experience! If you’re interested in booking Spaetzle, our ducks, and turkey for a visit of your own, check out Our Farm to Your School page.
Check out this video of Spaetzle the piglet enjoying a birthday party and eating grass while wearing a party hat!

Of course the poultry, pigs, and cows are loving the nice weather and the lovely, tall grasses. But what about our 2 crazy homestead dogs? Watch the video and see…
April 17, 2017 / Emma / Comments Off on Meet the Dexter Cows: Bull Johnny & Heifer Dani
It’s been a while since we’ve filmed the cows, so we thought it was a great time to reintroduce you! This video shows you how much Johnny had grown and we talk about how perhaps Dani is pregnant!
April 3, 2017 / Emma / Comments Off on Meet the Animals: Spotted Piglet & Her Siblings
This is another cute video featuring Half-Nose’s newest litter. How cute are they? Check out the spotted piglet… who we hope will be the next Farm to Your School visiting pig!
March 27, 2017 / Emma / Comments Off on Meet the Animals: Cutest Piglets Ever!
This past week, Half-Nose delivered a litter of cute little babies (including a spotted babe). The day after, another pig delivered her first litter, but since it was her first time as a mom, she wasn’t up to the challenge. Luckily, Half-Nose happily adopted her babies and is nursing away! Great job, Half-Nose!
February 8, 2017 / Emma / Comments Off on Electric Netting: Managing Animals the Easy Way!
We began our fencing journey solely with cattle panels and chicken wire, and eventually transitioned to electric fencing in places where it made the most sense. We started working with single strand electric, which never worked quite as well as we wanted (except for the cows!), and we decided to make the transition to electric netting for many of our pigs and all of our poultry. It’s the best decision we’ve EVER made here at KW Homestead!
There are so many benefits to working with electric netting… It’s easy to set up and take down, it contains even small piglets and birds, it’s durable and flexible, it never gets tangled (unlike single strand), and many more reasons!
Check out this video to see Jason explaining why electric netting is just the greatest!
This video introduces you to one of our all-time favorite homestead animals!
Half-Nose the Pig (yes, it’s a super-weird name) is now a sow, which means that she’s given birth. Her first litter was born last year and she had 4 babies. She may be pregnant (like me!) again, but we won’t be able to tell for a while since she’s already our fattest pig!
This video explains the origin of her name and why she is the fattest and biggest of our pigs. Check it out and let us know what you think about our lovely Half-Nose!
It’s the middle of winter here, and even though it’s not very cold right now, we’re still dreaming of spring!
This video is a brief look at the enthusiasm our free range & pasture raised ducks show when they think it’s dinner time. When Jason says “duck, duck, duck,” they know good things are coming their way!
