Also known as seaberry, sea buckthorn is an extremely useful plant with widespread recognition as both a superfood and superplant. Sea buckthorn uses range from erosion control to fine country wines. It’s nitrogen fixing ability, and extreme hardiness lends itself well to food forest establishment as both a support species and a fruit yielding shrub. Ben Falk talks about using hedgerows of sea buckthorn in his book The Resilient Farm and Homestead, to add life and nutrients to the soil while at the same time stopping erosion and creating a browse-able paddock boundary.
The orange berries are high in essential fatty acids and antioxidants and can be made into jellies, jams and skin and hair products. Livestock readily eat both fruit and leaves, and it is relatively high in protein.
Plants can yield up to 30 lbs. of fruit, and are extremely hardy.
Grow at least two, because both male and female plants are needed to produce fruit.
