FAQ: Where Should My Fruit Trees Be Planted?

Fruit trees grow the best in the full sun! Most fruit trees will also grow in half-day sun, but they will not bear as much fruit as trees planted in three-quarter or full day sun. With fruit trees, the sunnier the better!

There is one exception to this general rule—paw paws. Native paw paws grow well in shady spots and partially shady spots, but they also do fine in the sun. They’re versatile trees and make excellent additions to the shadier part of your yard that won’t support other traditional fruit trees.

Fruit trees also grow well in almost any soil type… They do well in North Carolina’s red clay soils and in other soil types. If you’re worried that your soil needs an extra nutritional boost before planting, we have fertilizers to help you round out your fruit tree’s nutritional needs!

Be sure that the spot you’re choosing for your fruit trees has good drainage. In general, fruit trees do not do well in spots that flood, have standing water, or stay very wet. They do best in well-drained soil and even on slopes (trees that bloom early like plums, cherries, and peaches particularly enjoy slopes). The paw paw is another exception to the well-drained soil rule—they thrive in low, wet, soggier locations.

What Can’t You Plant Right Now?

We’ve been talking about what you can get started in your garden during this late winter period, and the answer is: lots and lots of things!

But there are some plants that should not be started now, no matter if you plan to start them inside, in your greenhouse, or in the ground outside.

The plants that should not be started are some of your summer crops:

🪴 Basil
🪴 Green beans
🪴 Cucumber, squash, zucchini, & okra—Most of these plants only need 1-2 weeks in pots before being transplanted outside. You don’t want to stunt their growth by keeping them in pots for too long and the ground outside is too cold for them.

All of these crops like warm soil, and do not cope well or live in weather that is still this chilly.

Time to Plant Perennial Fruit & Berry Plants!

Not only is it the beginning of the spring vegetable gardening season, it continues to be a great time to plant perennial plants like berry bushes and fruit trees.

Many berry bushes produce super fast! Berries like blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry may fruit some their first year and will begin fruiting in earnest the year after.

Dwarf apple trees sometimes produce apples their first year after planting, and other fast-producing fruit trees like peaches will produce 2-3 years after planting. Some of our larger peach trees (6-7 feet tall) may produce even earlier!

Nut trees like pecans take longer to produce and the native paw paw tree also requires 5+ years before you get any fruit. No matter if you’re playing the food production long-game or if you’re in it for quicker yields, there’s a a little something for everyone.

What Can You Start Planting Right Now?

You can start planting just about everything, with the exception of some summer crops (more details on this later his week).

🍅 You can start tomato and pepper seeds indoors, to be transplanted out when the weather warms up. These will be harvested in June/July.

🥕 You can direct sow radish, carrot, and beets seeds. And don’t forget the greens! Kale, lettuce, chard, and more can be planted directly in the ground right now! Many of these crops will take around 45 days to be harvest-ready, 1-2 months depending on the crop.

😎 Fun fact: These direct sow seeds mature much faster in the warmer months, and can mature in 21-30 days instead of 45+. Why not plant some now, and some in spring and summer, to make your bounty last all of the growing season?

🥔 Seed potatoes can also be planted now!
