Modern Apple Trees
Apples are a top choice among gardeners because they are easy to grow and are later blooming than other fruits. This means that in cases of later season frost, apples are more resilient than other fruit trees. They’re an excellent addition to any edible landscape, and are classic fruits much beloved by children and adults alike.
The varieties that we are offering this year are of the best varieties for our North Carolina climate! Apples store well and are great to eat fresh or in cooking, making pies, ciders, or juices. Our appples have a variety of flavors—from dessert sweet to tart with more complexity.
We have a selection of apples on disease resistant dwarf and semi-dwarf route stock. Dwarf apple trees grow to be 8-10 feet tall but still yield full-size apples. These trees can yield 1 to 3 bushels per year, depending on variety, conditions, and management practices. Dwarfs are great for small backyards, urban farms, homesteads, and those that want to fit many different types of fruit into a small space! Because of their smaller stature, dwarf apples generally have to be staked or secured for structural integrity. Semi-dwarf apples grow to be 12-16 feet tall and yield more apples than dwarf varieties due to their larger size—they can yield 3 to 7 bushels per year, depending on variety, conditions, and management practices.
The modern apple varieties that we’ve selected this year are all delicious, unique, and well adapted for our area. We recommend each of these varieties and can help you select the flavor profile and tree size that best fits your yard or land.
